Aptamil is one of the most searched formula brands in the world, and the ownership question comes up constantly because the tin you see depends on where you shop. The short version: Aptamil belongs to Danone, the French food group, and is made by its Nutricia division. The longer version matters more, because Aptamil is not one recipe. It is a family of recipes made in different countries, and the country decides what is inside.
Who owns Aptamil
Aptamil is a Danone brand, produced by Nutricia, the specialised nutrition arm Danone acquired in 2007. Nutricia itself is much older than that. The Aptamil name dates to 1921 and has been through several owners, which is part of why the answer feels murky online.
You will also see the Milupa name on German tins. Milupa is another Danone subsidiary, and the two operate together as Nutricia-Milupa in the German market. Milupa on the label does not mean a different brand. It means the same company under a different local badge.
Where each Aptamil is made
This is the part that actually changes what you are feeding.

If you are ordering from a US reseller, the tin is almost always the UK or the German one. Both are legitimate. They are not the same product.
Why the country changes the formula
Every Aptamil made in the EU or the UK is built to EU Regulation 2016/127, which sets the floor: lactose has to lead the carbohydrates, DHA is mandatory, and there are hard limits on several nutrients. That is the shared baseline. Above that floor, Danone formulates for each market.
The clearest example is fat. UK Aptamil First Infant Milk is palm-oil free. It uses safflower, coconut, rapeseed and sunflower oil instead. German Aptamil Profutura contains palm oil, RSPO certified. Same brand, same parent company, opposite answer on the one ingredient many parents are actually checking for. We cover that split in detail in does Aptamil contain palm oil.
Prebiotic blends and the exact nutrient levels also shift between markets. So "is Aptamil good" is not really answerable until you say which Aptamil.
What this means if you are buying from the US
Aptamil is not FDA registered. No European formula is, because the brands have not gone through the US pre-market process. The FDA's infant formula guidance covers the products it does regulate, and parents importing formula for their own baby do so under enforcement discretion rather than under FDA approval.
In practice that means three things:
- You are buying through a reseller, not a US shelf. Check the reseller ships from EU or UK warehouses and can tell you which market the tin came from.
- Shipping runs roughly 5 to 10 days, so keep a two to four week buffer. See buying European formula in the USA.
- The label will be in English for UK tins and in German for Profutura. Scoop sizes and mixing instructions are printed on the tin you receive. Follow that tin, not a chart you found online.
How to check what you actually have
Look for the country of manufacture on the base or the back panel of the tin, near the batch code. UK tins say United Kingdom. Profutura tins say Germany. If a listing will not tell you the market before you buy, that is a reason to buy somewhere else, and a reason to look at how to authenticate imported European formula.
